Speaker: Dr. Raymond J Schnell

Topic: Disease disruption of the cocoa bean supply chain: A molecular genetics based breeding solution.

Biography: Dr. Schnell is the lead scientist for an international genetic improvement program for Theobroma cacao located at the Subtropical Horticulture Research Station, Miami, FL. The program is a collaborative project between USDA-ARS and Mars Inc., and includes breeding trials in South and Central America, West Africa, and South Asia. Dr. Schnell received his Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics in 1984 from North Carolina State University. He then worked with the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association in sugarcane and coffee genetics and breeding. Since 1987 he has been a research geneticist working on tropical/subtropical fruit crops breeding and has extensive experience with cacao, mango, avocado, and many miscellaneous tropical fruit crop species. His work has resulted in over 100 scientific publications and numerous speaking invitations both nationally and internationally.
